Tonight is the first night back to choir. I love choir. There is almost nothing better to me than a great choir. Of course, nothing worse than a bad choir. But here are a few reasons why I love choir as I have experienced it.
- It represents the body of Christ on so many levels. All are welcome, all bring their individual gifts and submit them to one another and to one leader for a greater good. We are all different parts of the body but all necessary. Some are toes, some are the brain or the heart, but each person brings something that is needed to complete the body.
- Harmony to me reflects creation. Individual beauty coming together to create one chord or moment that can move the soul and allow God to speak.
- My philosophy of music is that it should never be done the same way twice. Music should reflect life and life changes. I remember I played the song How Great is Our God for a funeral of a 16 year old boy. I had to play it completely different then I had ever played it. Choirs should have the same freedom. Life changes, so must the music.
- I love the dynamics that a choir can bring. You can have a solo voice and then 2 and then 3 until the whole choir can lift the roof off of a building.
- Then will the very rocks cry out! We are required to praise Jesus. I read a blog today that said creation will and does make a constant hum almost a song. The earth is singing His praise. We are invited to participate in that praise and that is AWESOME!
- The choir becomes a family. There is something that happens in a choir that brings unity to the group. Choirs know how to love!
I know there are many preconceived ideas about choir. Some would say that they HATE choirs. I guess I can understand that on some level because for so long choirs have brought death to services. No energy, no life, just notes on a page. Choir done right, brings life and exalts God!

I love choir, too! I miss it. I would agree that a song should never be done the same why twice.
By the way, I have read all your blogs and I can't get enough! I especially loved the one about "what are you passionate about?" That one made me think. Everyday since I read it I have been thinking about that question trying to figure it out for my own life. Good stuff! Keep it coming!
I had a rare chance to go to Brooklyn Tabernacle church and that chuch got a pretty happenin' choir.
Just like Sister Act movie, an awesome choir doesn't always have to be stiff and dressed in robes.
I heard many good things about opening night of choir . . .
