I am sitting at gymnastics watching Grace work towards her Olympic gold medal, and decided I would write a short blog about the newest addition to our family. Sometime last year, Grace's Sunday School class had a class pet... a hermit crab. Grace won the drawing and got to take "Herman" home to live a happy life at our home. Well, not all the preparation in the world can prepare you for a hermit crab. So, without going into all the details Herman was dead within a few months. Very sad day at the Hofer home.
Fast forward to Grace's birthday and Aunt Amy decided to ease Grace's pain by giving her a new hermit crab. Not any hermit crab but a painted, jewel encrusted, hermit crab named "Jewels". Determined not to repeat the same mistake, Don has read up gone to Petsmart and I believe has become an expert on the care and feeding of hermit crabs. New shells, new food, new water, new bark chips for the box we keep her in. Evidently Jewels is very happy and now has burrowed herself into the sand and we have not seen her in weeks. We think she might come out at night, but neither Grace nor I have witnessed this event. So we put water and food out for the pet we never see....ever. We pay money to feed the pet we never see. It truly is the stupidest pet...ever. And yes, I realize that they are called hermit crabs for a reason.

This just cracks me up! The polar opposite of the companionship craving feline that I have here with me, insisting on sitting on the key board, whenever I attempt to type.
LOL. I'll be passing this along to some of my pet-challenged friends...
Nice ... Way to kick someone when they're down. Next time I'm giving you a dog ...
so nice to read a jill blog!

I'm sitting here at work just cracking myself up reading this post. Thank-you Auntie Amy.
Nice to have you back blogging Jill. I've missed your blogs.

I feel for you. My daughter wanted one forever so a friend was giving her remaining crab away & I thought here's a chance to get one already set up & ready to go - took it home & thought the thing was dead the next day because parts of it were falling off....then I find out they do that - they lose parts as they molt & they are really still alive. I'm just glad I didn't throw it out in the trash. It lived a couple more years with several additional molts.
It's amazing a pet so small can be such a pain & so stupid...
By the way - thanks for a beautiful praise night. I so appreciate all the time & preparation you all put into it & can't wait for the next hymn and/or praise night!

Keri, I honestly read your comment after our experience yesterday with our dead hermit crab skin. At least we know she's....healthy???
