I would have to say that a phrase that is not fully appreciated that I have used throughout our marriage is, "What's not to like about that?" Usually it is a food issue. There will be some food that i absolutely love and I will see Don's dislike for it and before I can stop it, the words come out...."What's not to like about that." For some reason for me to accept his not eating something, I have to know why. He appreciates it greatly.
Sometimes I will look around at people at church that are not appreciating a song or a moment...and I can easily think, "What's not to like about that?" I want them to give me a list of reasons that they are not connecting to the moment. Is it the volume, the style, the voices? Is it a moment from their past that is influencing their acceptance today? What is it is that causes it to taste bad to some people, when it tastes so good to me.
When it comes to music, I could make a list of songs, albeit a short one, of songs I don't really love that we do at Sunset. But there is one thing that can cause me to connect to a song or a moment that I didn't like at first. When I see someone passionate about something, it makes me think twice about it. I ask myself, "What's not to like about that." Like if I go to a restaurant and my friend says that something is the best that they have ever tasted. I will be much more likely to try it with a good attitude. The mind is a powerful thing and I think can influence your tastebuds as well as your other senses.
So, if we as worshippers would become more passionate about what and who we love could we impact the taste of others? I am not suggesting at all that we should all like the same thing. I really am not. But if others see us coming to the table and enjoying the feast, perhaps they will be less likely to spit the food out immediately. Perhaps instead of just yelling out, "This tastes horrible!", they will stop for a moment and examine their own hearts and think, 'What's not to like about that." They will realize that it is not the food that they have to love, but the Creator of the feast. They will see our passion and just know that they, at the very least, must taste and see.......
